Editor's note: Since this is the Findlay Bottle Club, I am going to start showcasing interesting items from Findlay. Sometimes they will be treasures that club members share, things I see at a show, or things I come across online. If they are items on eBay, this does not mean that the club, or myself, is recommending the item, the venue or the seller. These will simply be for show-and-tell. Enjoy!
I love the graphics on this colorful Preparedness Flour sack from the McManness Milling & Grain Co, Findlay, Ohio.
It is listed on eBay now.
Research notes:
- The company was listed in the Official directory of Ohio flour mills (1918)
- They advertised in the 1933 Van Buren Ohio Centennial souvenir program.
- The McManness family name goes way back in Findlay's history, with a Lemuel McManness in the mill and grocery business in the 1890's. Perhaps an heir took up the same business later.
- Here is a photo of the companie's building, circa 1930's. The photo was in a great Findlay history photo supplement in the Findlay Courier, June 24, 2009. It is online in pdf form, and has tons of great vintage images from old-time Findlay.
