Perry Davis Pain Killer Advertising Bottle Postcards

Written on this real photo postcard of a house:
Home of Perry Davis, the Pain Killer man, Newport RI 1900

This was a postcard that did NOT come up in my 'bottles/postcards' daily search alert. It came up in another category I watch, Newport, in my hope of finding a Newport Beach CA milk bottle (hint-hint). But it caught my interest because the seller was focused on the photographer, and didn't give any info on the home's owner, this mysterious Pain Killer Man.

After a quick google, I discovered plenty of information on Perry Davis, so why the seller didn't add a little info to his listing is beyond me. I'll just share a little here, along with some links and a few pix of go-with tradecards.

Perry Davis could afford this mansion because of his successful business selling his PAIN KILLER.

Mark Twain thought it tasted awful:

It was not right to give the cat the "Pain-Killer"; I realize it now. I would not repeat it in these days. But in those "Tom Sawyer" days it was a great and sincere satisfaction to me to see Peter perform under its influence--and if actions do speak as loud as words, he took as much interest in it as I did. It was a most detestable medicine, Perry Davis Pain-Killer. Mr. Pavey's negro man, who was a person of good judgment and considerable curiosity, wanted to sample it and I let him. It was his opinion that it was made of hell-fire.

- Autobiography of Mark Twain  http://www.twainquotes.com/PerryDavis.html

From The History of Providence, RI. website:

Patent Medicines.  Of all the patent medicines manufactured, none possess a more world-wide reputation than Perry Davis's Pain-killer, which was discovered by Mr. Davis in 1840.  In 1843, Mr. Davis established himself in Providence, and began its manufacture.  The almost instantaneous relief afforded to acute pain, soon made Perry Davis's Pain-killer the most popular remedy in the country, a popularity that has in no way declined through the many years it has been before the public.

Previous to his death, Mr. Davis had associated his son, Mr. Edmund Davis, with himself, under the firm-title of Perry Davis & Son.  The principal office of the house is at 136 High Street, in Providence, with branch houses at 111 Sycamore Street, Cincinnati, O.;  337 St. Paul Street, Montreal, Ca.; and 17 Southampton Row, London, Eng.  In the rear of the office in Providence, is the factory where the Pain-killer is manufactured.   With Mr. Edmund Davis is associated his son, E. W. Davis, and son-in-law, H. S. Bloodgood, who are young, energetic business men, and are of great assistance in the management of the immense business connected with this manufactory.

The Pain-killer is sent to every part of the known world, and may be found in every place where drugs are sold.

 From http://opioids.com/painkiller.html

"PAIN KILLER" was patented by Perry Davis in 1845. It is believed to be the first nationally advertised remedy specifically for pain - as distinct from a particular disorder. "Pain Killer" was distributed by Christian missionaries around the world. In its heyday, Perry Davis' "vegetable elixir" was widely regarded as a wonderdrug. Its ingredients, mainly opiates and ethyl alcohol, were entirely natural. The concoction was created Perry Davis in 1840. Since "Perry Davis Pain Killer" was a registered trade brand name, there was no legal requirement to make its ingredients public on the bottle.

And finally: Google search link for lots more Perry Davis Pain Killer info.

Now here's a few fun bottle themed vintage postcards.

This one's not a postcard but I loved the graphics on this unused case of fruit jars (on ebay here).

Latest 4 Legends:

March 2012

Chuck Erb

I've known Chuck for a few years now and at Winter Muncie 2011 I kind of naturally gravitated to Chuck's room because in my opinion Chuck is not only a very unique person but it's hard to find someone as bubbly and fun to be around. It was at that time I asked if I could visit with him in Iowa, do a story and see Iowa from an Iowan's point of view. Of course he said he'd be delighted if I came by anytime but wasn't sure he merited a "story" but IMHO he is a true "Legend" more than worthy of a article.

Nov 2011

Darrell Plank

Darrell Plank has most likely THE Best "Rare" colored Fruit Jar Collection in the world bar none. In doing this interview with Darrell over the phone I came away actually quite impressed with the man. There is a whole lot more to him than meets the eye and rare fruit jars. Darrell is very laid back and down to earth but also very articulate, outgoing and personable. He's an incredibly intelligent person and extremely knowledgeable about his jars too.

Dave Hinson

I've never met Dave in person but I have known him since I joined the Fruit Jar Group on Yahoo back in Feb 2003.

In 2004 Dave, who is the "Owner" of the Group queried for an assistant Moderator and this humble author gladly accepted that responsibility. Dave and I are still Moderators.

July 2011

Dick Bere

There comes a time in everyone's life when they actually get a chance to meet someone who is really rather special.  Actually in my humble opinion, this person is extraordinary to say the least.  I haven't known Dick for very long but after spending the entire day with him, seeing his fabulous collection and hearing from others about his life and personal passions, I agree that he is somewhat remarkable. And mind you, it is not because he is a former President of The Kroger Co, the largest food retailer in the country bar none.  It is because he unselfishly gives of his money, time and energy to benefit the least of those in Cincinnati, OH.

Fr. Patrick Wilhellm

http://www.balljars.net/Legends/Fr.%20Pat%20bio.pdf

Talking with Fr. Pat I quickly realized that he was more than a character; he was actually very animated, hilarious and quite personable. Plus a very important message came through to me loud and clear too, when it comes to fruit jars; "it's not what you know that really matters but who you know that ultimately matters, including God Almighty."

May 2010

Mason Bright

http://www.balljars.net/Legends/Mason%20Bright%20bio.pdf

I was never sure whether Mason had the best Ball jar collection in the country or not because that's a subjective argument but what am sure of is that he had one of the best overall display environments of any collection I am yet to see and that's saying a lot.

April 2010

Paul Shoecraft

http://www.balljars.net/Legends/Paul%20Shoecraft%20bio.pdf

Paul is considered an expert on Australian jars most notably by many of those very people who live and collect fruit jars in Australia. Paul read at one time that there is a direct positive correlation between intellect and collecting something no matter what it is and he definitely is a fruit jar collector of the extraordinary kind.

Don Burkett

http://www.balljars.net/Legends/Don%20Burkett%20bio.pdf

Sometimes it takes unfortunate circumstances in order to accomplish extraordinary positive things. I was feeling a bit down and the weather was really lousy on a Friday morning in late October 2009 and through my fogged and gloomy thought processes a brilliant idea came to light. Why not take a trip and visit with some other collectors especially some old timers. I made the 545 mile, 9 hour trip to visit with "Mr. Mason" Don Burkett and I must say wholeheartedly I am that much the richer now for the experience.
